Cheryl – great to hear from you! I remember you as a cheerleader (or, should I say…a Wellesley Squaw!) Charlie was one of a kind – but so many of our teachers were back then. Because of Mr. Crockett and Gerry Murphy, I became a teacher and have been now for 36 years. So great to hear from you – and thanks, again, Cheryl, for your kind words! Shaun Kelly ’73

A beautiful story. I can close my eyes and imagine myself there, RIGHT THERE…BECAUSE I WAS. Charlie Burgess was my uncle and godfather. I was also a cheerleader for WHS (Bay State Champions every year! I brag now because I’m 63 yrs old!!) SMOKEY BURGESS was our Advisor. The only thing more precious to him than his Red Raider athletes, were his cheerleaders. Although he befriended and mentored so many students as well. Thank you for your thoughtful piece, he was the most wonderful man. I miss him so.

That is so wonderful, Michele! Thank you so much for your incredible kind words! We were so fortunate to have grown up in such an incredibly supportive, vibrant town as Wellesley! Love the fact that you can still hear the football announcements from your own lawn these days!

Ironically I work @ a high school and can hear the football announcements and marching bands from the central stadium nearby where I rake my own leaves 🙂
