I am the nephew of Howard Sotherden. Howard was born and raised in Syracuse, NY. The second of 8 children. The Grove story was legendary in our family. Howard’s two daughters are alive, one in Northern California, the other in Tennessee.

I was there, and it was a classic nor’easter! I too wish there were more Pats games on YouTube from the early years. Have you seen this series? A must-see. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_x_frsLShk

Great article and amazing recall. I am from Foxboro originally and remember the Schaefer / Sullivan/Foxboro Stadium days in late 70’s to the 90’s before I left New England.

I am trying to read up & watch older games & highlights. It’s still spotty and harder to get full games especially on lower level AFC teams like the Pats. If you are an Eagles or Giants or Saints fan even with bad teams there seem to be a lot more full games from the 70’s available. I enjoy personal touches like these a great deal.

I watched a clip of the week 9 1969 game against Miami at Alumni Stadium when the end zone was half flooded. The Pats went for 2 to try to win the game at the end but failed on the conversion. Were you at that game? It seems to be one of those missing really bad weather games which a lot of old school football fans like to talk about. When I show this clip to others on classic football groups a lot of people are surprised by the amount of standing water. Was there something about the design of the field?

From those ’69 clips I can see what you mean about Alumni Stadium being a high school field. It’s a far cry from the great complex they built for football, hockey, and basketball in later years.

Cheers

Sometimes I learn things I did not know, sometimes I just get a good feeling about this world. Both of those are a welcome break from from the daily news. Thank you!
